March 19, 2025
On Friday March 14th, the Special Olympics basketball team traveled to Iowa City to compete at the state tournament. There were two different events that athletes from Cherokee made it to state in. Lee Cates, a 5th grader made it to state in basketball skills. This event is an individual event where he has to show his skills in the 3 categories of basketball; shooting, throwing, dribbling. Lee was able to obtain a 1st place finish at the state competition! Our other event was 3 on 3 basketball that our team made it to state in. Our team consisted of Catelyn Younie, Kendra Robinson, and Charlie Harmon. They were able to make it past the first round with ease but their final game was hard fought. The other team was from Murray School and had speed on their side but we were able to fight hard and stick to our basics. They worked as a team and were able to persevere to pull out a win and secure the state title in their division! Congrats to all the athletes for getting a 1st place finish.
